Monrovia

1 februari 2017 - Monrovia, Liberia

Winston had made a wonderful breakfast! Afther breakfast Adrienne and me walked to Anneke. A rocky, sandy road. Anneke works for Manneka and places water wells in villages and has lived in Liberia for years. Winston picked us up and they took me on a city trip through Monrovia. We stopped at the Royal Hotel to have coffee and something to eat. After that we went to cruise the town. We visited the remains of the Ducor Hotel. Once a beautiful and luxurious hotel at a beautiful spot in Monrovia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ducor_Hotel. 2 guides showed us around the gronds of the hotel and told about the history. The hotel is on top of a hill with a beautiful view over the beach of Monrovia on one side and Monrovia city on the other side. A statue of the first president of Liberia, Joseph Robert was on the grounds of the hotel. Alot of shops downtown where closed. That meant that we could drive through parts of Monrovia that you can usually hardly even walk through, because it's so busy. We saw the first baptist church in Africa, govermentbuildings, several ambassies. Many buildings have alot of barbed wire on the fences. During the car trip I saw many impressive things about daily life in Liberia: people selling food and all kinds of things along the road/street. People in dumpsters looking for food or things they can use. Children in schooluniforms, people with overloaded wheelbarrows transporting all kinds of things. Taxi's with too many people in it. Alot of trash is thrown on the ground so there is alot of pollution. We stopped at providence island. The island where the first free slaves from America entered Liberia. We crossed part of the bridge to the island. Which has a nice park, but is closed most of the time. On the way back we took the road along the beach. Liberia also has beautiful nature and is very green with palmtrees, bananatrees, mangotrees, breadtrees etc.
